Forest Fortress Zone Empty Forest Fortress Zone

Post by Kyasarin Thu Aug 06, 2009 9:56 pm

It's a level, which is a forest with a castle in it. It's a single-player level. Note that some of these screenshots are taken in 1.09.4, which explains why Crawla sprites are slightly different.

The first Act is totally done, and I'm making decent progress on the second.

    Screenshots:

    ACT 1:

    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20022
    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20018
    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20019
    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20020
    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20021

    ACT 2:

    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20001
    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20002
    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20003
    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20004
    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20005
    Forest Fortress Zone Srb20006

NOTE: IF YOU WANT TO TEST (A) LEVEL(S), YOU MUST CONTACT ME ON IRC, E-MAIL, OR PRIVATE MESSAGES. PUBLIC RELEASES WILL *NOT* BE MADE UNTIL THE ENTIRE ZONE IS COMPLETE.

First off, I need beta testers. I've really only had about five people play this, and they didn't give much critique.
Second of all, I need critique and suggestions. I'm at a bit of a mental block at the area shown in the last image; it's a courtyard area and I really need ideas as to what I should put there (layout, architecture, gimmicks, platforming ideas).

I'll give a review once these screenshots load all over... me?

Edit: Okay, it looks very open, yes, but it seems a bit blocky at the moment. Also, it looks like there's only one pathway and no actual platforming in it. Just a bit of forward, jump, jump. The area looks very detailed with quite some sector scenery and thing scenery. But, it just seems a bit bland. No extras, just a plain area with a few small cliffs and some vines over you with a castle. It just doesn't seem interesting enough for me.

Besides that, I see only crawlas. It's a fortress so it should have CEZ robots.

I wouldn't add TOO many more robots, however. I think it needs a little more sector-based scenery.

Violo: There actually IS some platforming. There's a good amount at the start involving moving spikes that hurt you and various other things. There's an underwater section, falling floors, ceilings that move down when you approach them, and other things. I guess I didn't show them in the screenshots. There actually is a good amount of secrets. Hell, the first Act has a grand total of 53 hidden items!
There's several multiple paths (over five optional areas in the first Act, three in the second) and there's some platforming here and there. I showed screenshots of areas which would be visually appealing, which might be why you can't see much of the platforming areas.

Brown: I don't like Castle Eggman's robots. They don't fit in with the rest of the sprites, they look ugly, and they're more annoying than anything else. I might consider those spiked enemies that move across the ground, and various others.

Fawfulfan: What do you have in mind? I have various rivers, trees, hills, trunks, rock formations, and other things. There's also fountains, fences, benches, bridges, torches, and lakes.

But it would, of course, be much better with more than just crawlas: they're stupid, overused, and underpowered. That's also why you don't see them after Techno Hill Zone.

I would recommend adding some pieces of ground that are slightly higher or lower than the surrounding sectors. It creates the impression that the ground isn't pancake flat.

It looks awesome! My tip is just maybe placing more robots in Act 1. Also, you might post ,,It has enough!" But I can hardly see robots.

    ...flat emptiness is awesome? Okay.
Anyways, FFZ2 is cancelled, mostly because I just don't even like SRB2.
